Have you ever driven past a horrible accident and wondered what happened to the people involved?

Lane Anderson was on his way to church when a head-on collision left him in a coma and on a respirator. At Barlow Respiratory Hospital, he learned to breathe on his own, relearned to talk and to walk and is on the road to a full recovery.

"It all started here." When he woke up on a ventilator after a terrible car crash, Lane Anderson thought his life was over. But with expert care and encouragement from the committed team of caregivers at Barlow Respiratory Hospital, he started on his journey along the road to recovery. "They provided the best care possible."

Lane stays in close contact with the Barlow doctors, therapists and nurses who cared for him and who pushed him to get better and improve daily. It was not easy.

Pulmonologist Dr. David Nelson was responsible for Lane’s care when Lane was transferred to Barlow Respiratory Hospital. Patients are referred to Barlow when they have already experienced a long stay in intensive care and are dependent on machines to take their next breath. Barlow is the only facility of its kind on the West Coast and is recognized for its Ventilator Weaning Program. The first step on Lane’s road to recovery was to learn to breathe on his own again. The next step was to move from bed to wheelchair and finally to learn to walk again. In his wheelchair, he enjoyed the natural beauty of Barlow’s  park-like grounds. Now, Lane is able to walk on his own when he visits the calm open spaces of Barlow’s historic campus.

Lane credits speech therapist, physical therapist and occupational therapist at Barlow Respiratory Hospital for making it possible for him to start a new life. He is now breathing, talking, walking and living on his own. He works part time and continues his rehabilitation therapy.
