New Legacy Recovery Hosts a Film Premier

Mike Duffy

New Legacy, a new treatment center for alcohol and drug addiction in Lexington, Kentucky, will be hosting a short film premier on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the Bell House.

The 10-minute film, Our Legacy, introduces New Legacy and its two owners, Mike and Mick Duffy. The film focuses on Mike's experience growing up in the home of an alcoholic father and provides the back-story for why he and Mick, his son, are passionate about opening a treatment center.

If all we do is help people get sober, we've failed. Recovery is about getting a chance to write new chapters in your life.

Mick Duffy, CEO

Mike’s father, Gene Duffy, eventually found recovery and then founded Duffy’s Napa Valley treatment center in California in the 1960s, which remained family-owned until just a few years ago. But this experience of growing up in an alcoholic family shaped the Duffy family’s perception of what true recovery actually looks like.

For Mick, the CEO of New Legacy and grandson of Gene, it means that getting clean isn’t enough. “If all we do is help people get sober, we’ve failed. Recovery is about getting a chance to write new chapters in your life.”

Shannon Sell, clinical director, and her team have taken this challenge to heart. “We really re-thought the whole curriculum and treatment plan from the perspective of how we can help guests live a balanced, fulfilling and enriching life.” The New Legacy curriculum weaves the technique of storytelling into treatment, providing guests with a tangible way to literally write new chapters in their life.

Mick and Mike have long had a passion to open a treatment center in Lexington, partly because of Mike’s fondness for the equestrian industry. Several years ago, Mike semi-retired to Lexington and served as the chaplain at Keeneland, before founding New Legacy.

New Legacy currently offers individual and group therapy sessions (3 times a week) for guests who would like to remain at their job while pursuing recovery as well as sober living homes that provide a safe and accountable living situation for those in recovery. New Legacy accepts private pay or private insurance.

The premier on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. is free and open to the public. Guests should RSVP at https://mynewlegacy.com/event.
