The recession caused charitable giving of all types to decrease over the past few years.Nonprofits in the black community seem to be hit the hardest. My 10 counts Inc. launched in January 2012 to ease this burden as well as bring the community together with its giving circle. My 10 Counts Inc.'s purpose is to provide funding for existing nonprofit organizations who serve the poor, needy, underprivileged, and disadvantaged members of the Black Community in the United States. By making funding available to these nonprofits they will increase their sustainability and broaden their influence in the community. Giving Circles, a form of shared giving and social investment networking are definitely on the rise, but My 10 Counts differentiates itself by focusing on the strength of the community coming together. "Our strength is in the number of members, not the amount of an individual donation" states Executive Director and Founder, Joanne Reed. There are many times when one has the desire and passion to help a nonprofit, but the budget makes it difficult. With My 10 Counts, it's easy for the every-day working class person to become a philanthropist.
Members of My 10 Counts will give only $10.00 per month or $120 per year. Members join by visiting www.my10counts.org and signing up online. Funds raised will go to 10 areas or "Community Pathways" including Childcare, Drug Rehabilitation and, Crisis. The crisis fund was created with Hurricane Katrina in mind. "We all sat helplessly and watched Hurricane Katrina destroy cities, and we were outraged when the help that did come, came too late. We have to prepare for things like this, and as the black community, have the resources to get money to those in need quickly "states Reed.
The goals for My10Counts are as follows:
• For each member to give $10 per month, totaling $120 each year
• To reach a membership of one million people
• To award 100 million dollars in grants each year
• To create an endowment of 20 million dollars each year
• To maintain this one million person membership for 10 years
My 10 Counts Inc. is all about ordinary people coming together to do extraordinary things for the black community.
