New Digital Media Outlet Launches to Report on the Democratic Party and Progressive Movement

As President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office in a sharply divided country, Blue Tent, a new media publication, went live today with the mission of reporting on the Democratic Party and progressive movement.

Blue Tent offers original news reporting, aggregated content, and professional resources for people who work in the nonprofit or electoral arenas to advance political and economic inclusion. The site launches in the aftermath of an election that saw Democrats retake the White House amid record turnout—but also the failure of a “blue wave” to secure Democratic control of the U.S. Senate or additional state legislatures.

“These mixed results show that Democrats and progressives still need to do a lot of heavy lifting to build a true governing majority,” said David Callahan, Blue Tent’s founder and editor. “Seventy million Americans aren’t buying what we’re selling.”

Blue Tent will report in-depth on one of the top challenges Democrats face in a difficult political environment: Keeping together a diverse coalition that includes moderates, liberals and a growing number of Democratic Socialists. The site will provide insider news on people, organizations, funding, strategy and trends within the progressive/Democratic world.

Callahan said the growth of progressive groups and the new energy among youth activists, nonprofit advocates, donors and first-time political candidates were huge factors in securing Biden’s victory this month. But he also cited “serious differences” on ideology and strategy within this coalition.

Callahan said these tensions pose a major obstacle to Democrats expanding their recent gains and that a key mission of Blue Tent will be to promote more open dialogue among different players on the left.

Addressing the infighting among Democrats that broke out almost immediately after the election, Callahan noted: “People don’t need to agree on everything, and disagreements can be healthy. But the different parts of this world need to listen to one another and understand each other... working together under a big blue tent. Our reporting will help do that.”

Blue Tent is not aligned with any wing of the Democratic party and will be supported by subscriptions and limited advertising, marking the emergence of another niche media publication that is looking to readers to become financially sustainable.

David Callahan previously created Inside Philanthropy, the nation’s leading news site reporting on charitable giving, which he continues to lead. Callahan was also co-founder of Demos, the New York-based progressive policy center, and is the author of nine books.
