Part of his new series of conceptual works, David Datuna's Portrait of Marilyn sold to a private collector during the prestigious Art Southampton on July 28th. Using his signature element of cascading eyeglass lenses, Datuna created a striking visual image of the iconic 20th century actress emphasizing the limitless impressions of her public celebrity. Sold at the fair by Birnam Wood Galleries of New York, the work was offered at $150,000.

David Datuna's portraits have been a focal point of interest at several international fairs over the last three years. Possibly his most iconic work was a large portrait of Apple founder Steve Jobs formed from tiny images of the libertarian author Ayn Rand that sold in Miami in 2012. And the artist's image of supermodel Natalia Vodianova was sold at a charity auction in Moscow for nearly $800,000 in February of 2012.

Though his portraits have typically been monochromatic, this work was rendered using thousands of dots and right-angled lines introducing bold color for the first time. The veil of optical lenses covering the work transformed the background imagery into a mosaic of elegant movement.

The debut of this new series will kick off a series of important events for the artist. Datuna will be awarded the Malevich Prize in Paris in October, followed by simultaneous exhibitions this fall at Gallery Shchukin locations in Moscow and Paris. Titled David Datuna: Eyes to Eyes, these exhibitions will present his perception of the tumult of 100 years of Russian history. At the show's focal point will be an installation featuring the encounter of two portraits: Russian President Vladimir Putin and the last Russian Czar, Nicholas II.

Originally from the Republic of Georgia, David Datuna now lives and maintains a studio in
New York. His work has been exhibited extensively, including shows in Europe, Russia, China and the United States. He is represented in Europe and Russia by Gallery Shchukin, and in the United States by Birnam Wood Galleries.
