National Renewable Solutions, LLC Celebrates Completion of 560 MWs of Broadview Wind Projects and Announces 199 MW PPA With Evergy on Expedition Wind Project
MINNEAPOLIS, February 6, 2020 (Newswire.com) - National Renewable Solutions, LLC (NRS) celebrated the completion of its fourth and final phase of the Broadview wind projects in Curry County, New Mexico, and Deaf Smith County, Texas. The four wind projects have been constructed over the past five years and are now all operating and owned, individually, by BayWa Renewables/Goldman Sachs and Pattern Energy. The local Broadview members and the NRS team and local officials celebrated the event on Jan. 29 with a tour of the projects and dinner that evening in nearby Clovis, New Mexico.
Local landowners and NRS formed Broadview in 2012, with the landowners as both leaseholders and investors/members in the project company. The NRS team led the development of the projects, which collectively represent one of the largest wind developments in the U.S. (photo of the Broadview Project).
Unique to these projects was Broadview’s acquisition of over 560 MW of long-term transmission rights from Cargill Companies in 2013. This transmission ran through Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) and Arizona Public Service (APS), ultimately providing for the delivery of most of the renewable energy to Southern California Edison (SCE) and Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD).
The third-party transmission services represented approximately 750 miles through New Mexico and Arizona for delivery into the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) market, where SCE and SMUD receive their power from the projects. Broadview and NRS worked for three additional years to confirm the transmission with PNM and APS and to secure the project’s first California Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) from Southern California Edison in 2015.
As the PNM and APS transmission service was confirmed, Pattern Energy agreed to step in to continue to perfect the transmission rights, construct and ultimately operate the three additional renewable projects (Broadview Energy KW – 160 MW; Broadview Energy JN – 164 MW; and Grady Wind Energy Center – 220 MW). This long-term/long-range transmission service represents one of the longest deliveries of direct renewable energy with fully certified Renewable Energy Credits into an alternate ISO service area.
The Broadview development effort began in 2011/12 with construction in 2013 of Broadview’s 19.8 MW project. NRS sold the project to BayWa after securing a PPA with Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, in cooperation with Farmer’s Electric Cooperative, the local Rural Electric Association. BayWa later sold the project to Goldman Sachs.
Additionally, representatives from NRS participated in Evergy’s press event announcing the execution of a 199 MW PPA with Expedition Wind, a National Renewable Solutions wind project development located in Marion County, Kansas.
“We are incredibly pleased to have the opportunity to celebrate completion of over 560 MW of projects in New Mexico on the same day Evergy announces our PPA on our Expedition Wind Project,” remarked Patrick Pelstring, CEO and Chairman of NRS. “Today is a culmination of several years of hard work from our contractors, financial partners, and staff and is a testament to the value of the long-term partnerships we create with the local landowners and communities where our projects are located.”
As a part of the Broadview celebration, and consistent with NRS history, National Renewable Solutions made a $20,000 grant to the CapRock Village Economic & Community Development Corporation to support their mission.
