The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) is proud to announce a new addition to its Board of Directors — William Alexander, MD, FACP, Plan Performance Medical Director, Amerigroup Community Care of Georgia, a wholly owned subsidiary of Anthem.

Dr. Alexander is a nationally recognized health care quality leader with a lengthy career as an administrator and in academia. In his current role with Amerigroup, which he has served since 2010, Dr. Alexander has oversight of the health care needs of Amerigroup Georgia's 574,000 members. In addition, he serves as the principal medical manager and policy advisor to the health plan.

A board-certified internal medicine and infectious disease physician, Dr. Alexander has served as a member of the Infant Mortality Task Force of the Georgia Department of Public Health, the Georgia Maternal Mortality Review Committee. He currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Institute of Health Administration, Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University. He has served on the board of directors for Families First, the leading nonprofit family service agency in Georgia, and ZAP Asthma, a partnership created to reduce preventable morbidity and mortality from asthma for children living in Atlanta's Empowerment Zone. Dr. Alexander is a member of the Georgia Medicaid Credentialing Committee and the Georgia Department of Community Health's Medical Care Advisory Committee. Dr. Alexander is a member of the American College of Physician Executives and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians

Before joining Amerigroup in 2010, Dr. Alexander served as Vice President of Administration and Strategic Management and was the Senior Advisor to the President and Assistant Dean for Health Care Quality at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. Previously, Dr. Alexander served as National Quality Medical Director for Cigna HealthCare, where he developed the company's clinical quality strategy.

"As a longtime champion of health care quality, Dr. Alexander is sure to make insightful contributions as a member of the NCQA Board," said NCQA President Margaret E. O'Kane. "His experience in many areas — from member engagement to provider collaboration and social determinants of health — will play an essential role as our health care system continues its digital, patient-centered transformation."

"I am honored to join the NCQA Board and to work toward its mission to improve the quality of health care for all patients," said Dr. Alexander. "As a physician executive, I know that we all win when more people have better access to the highest quality of care available."

NCQA is governed by an independent Board of Directors composed of 18 members and the NCQA president. The board includes representatives from purchasers, clinicians, public policy experts, consumer groups and health systems, representing a multi-stakeholder perspective for improving health care system quality through delivery system reform and transparency.
