MSC Software Partners With Pioneer Natural Resources to Create Adams Drill Platform
Newport Beach, California, April 26, 2017 (Newswire.com) - MSC Software Corp., a global leader in helping product manufacturers to advance their engineering methods with simulation software and services, has partnered with Pioneer Natural Resources, a leading U.S.-based independent oil and gas company, to configure the Adams platform to simulate drilling operations, dynamics, and dysfunctions.
By bringing together the best of Pioneer’s innovation and drilling teams with MSC’s outstanding simulation experts and computational scientists, MSC’s Adams software is being custom tailored to fit the needs of the oil and gas industry. The comprehensive application being developed allows users to vary the drill string components, operating parameters, wellbore geometry, lithology and control algorithms being used to understand their effect on drilling dynamics. With Pioneer, MSC is creating a user-friendly interface to display the simulation results in both new and familiar ways to individuals in the industry with and without simulation experience.
“We are delighted to partner with Pioneer to harness the power of our industry leading Adams application to serve the needs of the oil and gas market,” said Michael Lambert, Vice President - Americas at MSC Software. “Pioneer’s quest to innovate and drive operational efficiency is truly impressive. They’re just good at what they do, and we’re humbled to be able to partner with them.”
“Pioneer is a technology leader in the oil and gas industry in large part because we seek the best and brightest partners to deliver cutting-edge, best-in-class simulation tools to advance our drilling operations,” said Chris Cheatwood, Pioneer’s chief technology officer and executive vice president of business development and geoscience. “MSC has a proven track record of providing physics-based dynamic modeling to the automotive & aerospace industries, and this is a unique opportunity for us to help bring the same capability to U.S. onshore independent operators.”
Pioneer is helping MSC refine and validate this adapted software by gathering real-world data using recording subs placed throughout the drill string in different well configurations. This data provides ground truth measurements the simulation results can be compared against to verify the accuracy of the models and improve them as needed.
“We’re very excited about the potential for Adams Drill,” said Cheatwood. “This software allows us to simulate drilling an entire well from start to finish, monitoring a range of new parameters we’ve never had access to before. This lets us test multiple designs in parallel and compare the results side-by-side to quickly hone in on the optimal configuration for each well.”
