Mississippi Graduation Rate is on the Rise With Jumpstart Test Prep
End-of-course failures won't stop Hickory Flat Attendance Center senior from graduation after improving his ACT English subtest score from a 16 to 22 following use of Jumpstart Test Prep English review!
BROOKHAVEN, Miss., December 16, 2019 (Newswire.com) - While Mississippi’s graduation rate continues to climb, the state fell short of the national graduation rate of 84 percent last year. Scoring higher on the ACT® exam is one key to improving this graduation rate. Students not meeting graduation end-of-course requirements are able to overcome this obstacle by meeting the required benchmarks for college readiness on the ACT® exam.
Meet Lane Gorden, a high school senior attending Hickory Flat Attendance Center. Lane struggled with the state’s English II end-of-course test and failed on three attempts. “Graduating was not going to happen for me But my school let me know if I could make a 17 on the English section of the ACT®, the requirement would be met and I could graduate. The only problem was, I had already taken the ACT® exam 3 or 4 times before, and the best score I could manage was a 14 composite with a 16 on the English section,” said Lane. “My school didn’t give up on me. They provided the Jumpstart Test Prep review before my next attempt and I got to work.”
Jumpstart Test Prep has constructed an online review program based on over 40 years of work by Mississippi’s 19-year STAR teacher hall-of-fame inductee: the legendary educator and tutor Dot McClendon. Its method, consistent quality, and innovation is a culmination of her lifetime experience.
The company’s website, www.jumpstarttestprep.com, describes their program as a review utilizing streaming video modules that are delivered on-demand. The program is designed for classroom integration or individual study and proven to help students of all ability levels stay fully engaged and gain the most improvement in the shortest time by explaining difficult content in a way that every student can follow and understand. Students follow and complete the accompanying workbook as the review proceeds. Modules review the must-know content, include testing strategies specific to the exam, and conclude with realistic practice questions modeled from actual "retired" exams that are provided under time constraint. According to student reviews of the program on the website, the program helps students with time management, allowing them to work faster on test day.
“I only focused on the Jumpstart English review. It was really straightforward, reviewing grammar rules and showing me the correct use. It clicked,” said Lane. “I felt much more confident on test day. After the test, I knew I had done better, but wondered what my score would be or if it would be enough.”
Getting the results
A few weeks later, Lane learned he had improved his ACT® English subtest score by 6 points, resulting in a 22! “Even though I only focused on prepping for the English section, this moved my composite score 2 points higher to a 16. This class helped me tremendously,” Lane surmised.
“We are all so proud of Lane, and thrilled this graduation requirement is now met,” said Jane Hubbard, the principal of Hickory Flat High School. “As his score indicates, the Jumpstart Review we provided in class and the help and support from our teachers along with his determination should show others at risk that graduation can be achieved.”
Lane’s mom, Allison, shared that “We are extremely grateful for the support from the faculty and staff for their dedication and hard work. We are so glad a diploma is now in Lane’s future.”
“More and more schools are beginning to identify at-risk seniors, those near the benchmark ACT® 17 subtest score needed to bypass end-of-course failures, and provide the Jumpstart Test Prep review to prepare for another ACT® attempt to meet or exceed the benchmarks,” says company co-founder Sha Walker. “And many students like Lane are achieving it.”
Co-founder Dot McClendon added, “I am thrilled by the teacher feedback and the success of our Mississippi high school students using our Jumpstart Test Prep review,” said McClendon. “We have found that when students are coached step-by-step, they can quickly secure significant gains, regardless of their initial proficiency in the subject area.”
Walker and McClendon cite the top three competitive distinctions of Jumpstart Test Prep:
1. Proven exam prep expertise honed over a lifetime of successful results. The content review is delivered on-demand. It is highly visual and animated. Students respond to the ACT®-style practice questions.
2. The Jumpstart Test Prep review is engaging, not boring! It is presented by a group of fun, young, diverse people, and is presented in short 30-minute segments. Students must actively engage as they follow along in their workbook to build flashcards by completing the blanks and work ACT®-style practice problems as the online review progresses.
3. Improved time management. Jumpstart Test Prep reviews content step-by-step, and then shows how to apply that content with follow-up examples. The examples are followed with challenge questions allowing a clock timer countdown. Time is critical on the ACT® and by the end of our review, Jumpstart Test Prep students know the average amount of time they can allocate per question and what to do when too much time has lapsed.
