Mgu Partners Up With World Bank's Programme On Climate Change In Africa
Online, October 25, 2011 (Newswire.com) - The World Bank, in collaboration with more than 30 global partners, is launching the Connect4Climate initiative - a campaign, a competition, and a community that cares about climate change and its effects on Africa.
The Connect4Climate competition is a chance to spread awareness among the people of Africa about the climate change. The youth of Africa is being offered a platform via different websites and Facebook pages. This will give them an opportunity, not only to articulate the challenges of climate change seen from their perspective, but also to use their enormous potential as agents of social change to raise awareness and mobilize for climate adaptation and mitigation within Africa. In this campaign, Connect4Climate is running a photo and video competition on climate change focused on African youth and the winners will be awarded with varied prizes.
Mahatma Gandhi University has become the knowledge partner for this programme, where our students and faculties will talk about how climate changes are affecting their daily lives. Climate change is the major issue for Sub-Saharan Africa. We will make them aware about the choices they make in their daily lives and how they contribute to the preservation or degradation of the natural resources.
Africa continent has warmed up about half a degree Celsius over the last century, and the average annual temperature is likely to rise an additional 3-4 degrees by 2099. Dry areas will become drier and wet areas wetter and it will be a great challenge to the livelihoods and economic activities that depend upon natural resources.
So, to meet this challenge, it is necessary to make the youth of Africa aware about the future dangers. Mahatma Gandhi University feels proud to have become their partners in order to support them and be a part of such a noble cause.
