McAllen Data Center and Asteroid Partner for Improved Cross-Border Interconnection
McAllen Data Center partners with Asteroid to build the first internet exchange point in South Texas.
MCALLEN, Texas, October 2, 2017 (Newswire.com) - McAllen Data Center (MDC), the leading colocation provider on the U.S.-Mexico border, and Asteroid, the interconnection platform innovator, today announced their new partnership to build the first internet exchange point (IXP) in South Texas.
The new exchange point formed from this partnership is based on Asteroid's new lightweight design and housed in MDC's headquarters in McAllen, Texas, where the company connects the largest concentration of Mexican carriers in the U.S.
As the first IXP on the border, it creates a unique opportunity for the peering community to grow in Southern Texas and Mexico.
"My team did exhaustive research of the most successful IXPs in the world because it is important to us to bring the very best experience to our clients," says Juan Salazar, CEO of MDC. "We decided to partner with Asteroid because of their deep experience in the Internet exchange space, both in Europe and the Americas."
For Asteroid, the chance to partner with one of the most dynamic data center operators in the U.S. was equally compelling.
"It's an exciting opportunity," says Remco van Mook, Asteroid CEO. "MDC's expertise, facilities, and location make for a killer combination. There's incredible potential for growth on both sides of the border, and together we can provide a gateway, especially for Mexican networks to peer with international content providers."
The value of IXPs is that, by enabling local traffic exchange, they improve network performance, reduce latency, and cut the need for costly transit arrangements. Together, these factors enable growth, resilience, and interconnectivity.
While there's nothing new about IXPs, the Asteroid platform sets a new standard for IXPs. It is a return to the original spirit of simple, efficient interconnection, but built on state-of-the-art technology; lightweight, scalable architecture; and advanced toolsets.
For network operators on both sides of the border, an internet exchange point in MDC's secure, carrier-neutral facilities means new levels of interconnectivity, resilience, and uptime.
