Massive Energy-Saving Project Reduces 100M Gallons of Water Used and 16,000 Metric Tons of CO2 Produced Each Year in Newark

Project Also Saves Newark Housing Authority $35k Annually with the ENERVEX VHX Economizer and Heat Exchanger Solution

Newark Housing Authority

ENERVEX, a global supplier of mechanical draft systems and integrated venting design solutions, completed an economizer and heat exchanger project with the Newark Housing Authority as part of a larger energy-saving program that will save the city of Newark, NJ $80 million over the next 15 years and significantly reduce the environmental impact of operating its 236-unit residential facility – including 100 million fewer gallons of water and 16,000 fewer metric tons of CO2 produced each year.

In an older structure such as this one, centralized piping for boilers built 75 years ago presented a huge opportunity to modernize the plant and recover large amounts of heat into usable energy, versus wasted fuel. Studies have shown that fuel makes up approximately 96 percent of all operating costs in any boiler room, and 10 to 20 percent of energy input is lost in the form of heat escaping to the atmosphere. ENERVEX designed a high-efficiency VHX Economizer and Heat Exchanger solution, which alone is saving NHA more than $35,000 annually.

"We are pleased, along with two of our reps at UEP and Miller & Chitty, to have played a role in such a huge win for the environment, the city, and its residents. The best part of this solution is that there is no upfront cost to the customer and payback is being guaranteed by the contractor, Constellation Energy."

Steen Hagensen, President of ENERVEX, Inc.

“We are pleased, along with two of our reps at UEP and Miller & Chitty, to have played a role in such a huge win for the environment, the city, and its residents,” said ENERVEX President Steen Hagensen. “The best part of this solution is that there is no upfront cost to the customer and payback is being guaranteed by the contractor, Constellation Energy.”

The Economizer solution recovers 607,926 more BTUs per hour and saves $35,621 per year, with boiler efficiency increases to 86.4 percent, better pressure control, elimination of overheating problems, and savings that will accrue long after hardware installation. In addition residents will no longer experience extreme hot water temperatures or lack of control over room temperature, and can remain in their homes during the project.

Furthermore, in the first year, the broader program with Constellation Energy eliminates more than:

·          109 million gallons of water

·          7.5 million kWh of electricity

·          1.2 million Therms

·          Total carbon footprint reduction: 16,000+ metric tons of CO2 per year
