Marie Curie Cancer Care Launches £1 Million Fundraising Appeal for Devon Nurses

Online, March 22, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Marie Curie Cancer Care launches its first ever local Nursing Appeal in Devon. The charity is calling on local people to help raise the £1 million needed this year to ensure that terminally ill people across the county can continue to access the Marie Curie Nursing Service completely free of charge.

Marie Curie Nurse Carol Drummond officially launched the appeal at an event at Sandy Park Conference and Banqueting Centre in Exeter.

Carol, who is fronting the appeal, is one of the 85 Marie Curie Nurses in Devon who provide free nursing care to terminally ill people who want to remain at home at the end of their lives. Last year, Carol and her colleagues provided more than 36,000 hours of care to 676 people with cancer and other terminal illnesses in Devon.
Dawn Tame-Battell, Area Nursing Manager, said "Everyone should have access to the best possible care at the end of their life, and in their place of choice. For most people this means being at home, surrounded by the people and things they know and love. Our Marie Curie Nurses in Devon are expecting more people than ever before to need their care this year and they can only do it with your support.
