Making A Difference In Haiti On The Disaster Recovery Hour With Chris Plunkett
Online, November 4, 2010 (Newswire.com) - The Disaster Recovery Hour with Chris Plunkett which airs Saturday mornings at 7 AM on am 970 The Apple in the NYC area and can be heard streaming live or by podcast, recently introduced its audience to two very different organizations who are effectively making strides in Haiti's recovery and sustainability, in an effort to bolster support.
Just days away from returning to Haiti, a country whose struggles just recently intensified with the outbreak of cholera, MMRC Global and Waveplace Foundation appeared on The Disaster Recovery Hour with Chris Plunkett and discussed what they've done and what they plan to do to aid Haiti, now and in the future. They each discussed the roadblocks their journey has faced and will continue to encounter as hurricane season comes to an end with the threat of Tomas, the cholera outbreak and diminishing donations as the catastrophe gets older and fades away from front page news.
First on air, MMRC Global or Material Management Relief Corps' Paul Sebring (aka Big Paul) and Paul Waggoner (aka Little Paul), recently dubbed the "Haiti's Cowboy EMT's" by Mens Journal. MMRC Global, which is dedicated to helping medical "get it done" on the ground in Haiti, creating an effective EMS and search and rescue program, and their work supporting orphanages. As the audience listened Big Paul and Little Paul explained how and why MMRC Global evolved and their plans for the future. "The footprint we want to leave in Haiti, our long term commitment is to establish a 911 and EMS System."-Paul Sebring. No small undertaking, their goal is to raise $3 million over the next 5 years to get the 911 system up and running.
Again just days prior to his departure to Haiti, Timothy Falconer, founder of the Waveplace Foundation appeared on The Disaster Recovery Hour. With 18 pilots in various locations in the Caribbean and Central America, Mr. Falconer discussed with Chris the Foundations educational program utilizing One Laptop per Child's hardware for their innovative educational platform. As Tim explained "with only 5% of children graduating high school and less than half ever attending high school at all, the education system in Haiti has a lot of problems. We use these little laptops almost as portable schools". The discussion covered infrastructure to hope while delivering the message "encouraging adults and kids to use their laptops to their full potential can have profound educational benefits"-wavelace.org. Waveplace Foundation currently has 7 pilots running in Haiti and hopes to have 16 schools running by summertime.
Specific donation requests for translators, curriculum preparation to money are heard during the show. "I hope hearing directly from these gentlemen will affect the audience the same way it did me and inspire our listeners to get involved and donate whatever they can directly to these two worthy causes"-Chris Plunkett.
