M.J. Rayburn's 'The Listening Tree' is the Story About a Young Boy With Asperger's Who Makes an Unconventional Friend That Helps Him Open Up

'The Listening Tree' from M.J. Rayburn follows a young boy with autism who is having a hard time relating to his classmates. His parents take him on a trip that gives him the tools to start making friends and talk to people more

M.J. Rayburn has 18 years of experience in the classroom, teaching both visual arts and English across all grade levels. Inspired by her son, who also struggles with autism, she wrote what is her first children's story to let other kids know that they aren't alone.

Taking inspiration from one of her son's paintings, "The Listening Tree" follows young Jacob, a young boy with Asperger's who has trouble getting the other kids to understand him. After one bad day at school, his parents decide to take him out to a tree farm to get some new plants. It's there that he finds one special tree that requires him to talk to for it to grow.

Published by Newman Springs Publishing, "The Listening Tree" is an inspirational tale that aims to show autistic children that there are others like them out there. With a little patience and understanding, help is out there for them to grow and thrive just as much as Jacob and his tree did.

Young readers who are looking to learn about their not-so-different classmates can purchase "The Listening Tree" at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iBooks Store, Amazon, or Barnes and Noble.
