Lonnie McNair: Antioxidants May Play Important Role in Pancreatic Cancer Prevention
Online, August 7, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Antioxidants have long been connected to preventing the development of cancer, and many Americans have adopted them into their diets as a result. Now, new research reveals that consuming a diet consisting of particular antioxidants can reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer by up to two-thirds. The recent study was highlighted in a new article from USNews and explains that diets rich in selenium, vitamin C and vitamin E are observed to reduce a patient's chance of developing the, often fatal, condition. U.S. Army veteran, Lonnie McNair, is involved with raising awareness and funds for cancer research; he explains why nutrition is always important and applauds this new research.
Throughout his 20 years of service to the American military, Lonnie McNair was focused on protecting his country and preserving its freedom. Today, protection is still important to him, especially in terms of public health. Through his past involvement with the American Cancer Society and several other charitable organizations, McNair has become increasingly aware of all the dangers that can pose a higher risk of cancer development - diet being one of the main contributors.
The article explains that while the results of the British study was purely observational and offered no information on a cause-and-effect relationship, the findings could lead to further studies. Researchers note that if such a diet does have a direct link to pancreatic cancer, it could help reduce cases up to eight percent. With approximately 250,000 people affected by the disease each year, antioxidants could save nearly 20,000 lives.
Lonnie McNair adds that prevention is especially important with pancreatic cancer, as victims typically die in months following diagnosis and there is little research regarding a cure. He comments, "The research that is being performed to determine whether antioxidants may help reduce the chances of pancreatic cancer is great. Our food and supplement intake is very important in so many ways and it would be wonderful if a healthy change in our diets would significantly reduce the chances of an individual getting pancreatic cancer."
Regardless of what further research reveals, Lonnie McNair encourages everyone to engage in a sensible and nutritional diet. McNair concludes, "If the research is confirmed, it may help people better understand the importance of a healthy and balanced diet. Personally, I primarily eat fish, chicken, and turkey along with plenty of vegetables and fruits which allows me to lead an active lifestyle."
