The City of Sarasota is pleased to announce the highly anticipated Grand Opening of the new Robert L. Taylor Community Complex (RLTCC) recreational facility, located at 1845 34th Street, Sarasota. The grand opening event kicks off with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Friday, September 2, 2011, at 10:00 am, followed by an Open House Festival on Saturday, September 3rd, and again on Monday, September 5th, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. General membership fees will apply beginning Tuesday, September 6th.

The Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, affectionately known to the Newtown community as "The Rec," was built in the 1950s and has become a community anchor for many families, organizations, and individuals throughout north Sarasota. After serving the community for over 60 years, the 13+ acre property has undergone a massive $10 million, complete transformation, from a 5,000 sq. ft. building to now a 44,000 sq. ft. interactive campus. The concept for the facility began years prior to the June 2010 groundbreaking with several community focus groups to identify the recreational needs and desires of the community at large.

Through a partnership with Suncoast Workforce, General Contractor Manhattan-Kraft Construction, Inc. was able to create employment and training opportunities within the North Sarasota region throughout the construction phase of the project and beyond.

The NEW facility is LEED Silver Certified and offers an assortment of recreational and leisure activities for all demographics that include indoor and outdoor basketball courts, a fitness center with over thirty new cardio stations surrounded by an indoor walking track, a weight room, two group exercise rooms including a dance studio with ballet bars and mirrors, an amazing multi-purpose auditorium that seats over 300 people with state of the art audio visual capabilities that can be utilized for dances, meetings and special events. The facility also features a game room, computer lab, arts and crafts room, a commercial kitchen, outside amphitheatre, an outdoor volleyball sand pit, shaded playgrounds, a picnic area with grills and a marvelous family aquatic center that boasts a 15ft water slide, zero entry play "splash pad," exercise/lap pool and much more.

The RLTCC will be operated by the City of Sarasota, under its Manager, Jerry Fogle who stated, "This amplified complex will serve as a 'Regional' facility, with endless opportunities to host special events, outdoor concerts, sporting competitions, community meetings, birthday parties, family reunions, and more." Mr. Fogle also commented, "The Robert L. Taylor Community Complex Ribbon Cutting Ceremony is the beginning of a celebratory weekend and all are welcome to attend."
