Local Treatment Center Offers Cancer Survivors Buddy Project to Encourage Healthy Activity

The Buddy Project Provides Cancer Survivors An Opportunity To Stay Fit

The Buddy Project, a non-profit organization affiliated with Highlands Oncology Group (Highlands), Northwest Arkansas’ leading cancer treatment facility, will now meet at the YMCA in Rogers.

The Buddy Project meets at 9 a.m. every Thursday at the Northwest Arkansas Mercy Family YMCA. In addition, Buddy Project Yoga meets at 10 a.m. every other Wednesday at Trailside Yoga located at 600 W. Center Street in Fayetteville.

The mission of The Buddy Project is to reduce cancer risk and recurrence by providing mentors to help increase the health and well-being of people impacted by cancer through physical activity, education, knowledge and the support of a buddy system, according to Highlands.

Research has shown that exercise is not only safe and possible during cancer treatment, but it can improve how well one functions physically and their quality of life, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Benefits of physical activity include: lower risk of falls and broken bones, muscle retention, lower the risk of heart disease, lessen the risk of osteoporosis, improve blood flow, emotional and mental well-being, lessen symptoms of nausea and fatigue and more, according to the ACS.

As the leading cancer treatment and research facility in Northwest Arkansas, Highlands is dedicated to the advancement of cancer treatment and to providing patients with the best possible care and results.

Northwest Arkansas Mercy Family YMCA is located at 5214 Village Parkway in Rogers.
