Local Houston Wrought Iron Man Has Long Standing Family Tradition
Online, August 5, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Curtis Gonatas, owner of A&S Iron Works in Houston, TX is proudly carrying on a long held family tradition of metal working. A third generation metal worker, Gonatas' Grandfather was a blacksmith in Greece, where Gonatas was born and grew up.
"Not many people stick with the family business anymore these days." said Gonatas in his Southwest Houston iron work shop. Gonatas said he can recall his Grandfather working in his blacksmith shop, and watching his father doing his own metal working back on Greece. Gonatas himself began learning metal working with simple welding skills.
After a period in the Hellenic Navy, during which he furthered his welding and metal working skills, Gonatas began his iron working business here and has been serving Houston and surrounding areas since 1973. "Apparently it is just in my blood."
A&S Iron Works' business is primarily fabricating and installing Houston wrought iron gates, and fence, but Gonatas also considers himself an artisan and craftsman. He makes many original pieces to custom order, including metal artwork and artistically designed custom functional iron ornamentation. "It is a dying art form, I suppose, but it's what I do." Many of the art pieces include things like custom designed furniture, wine racks, and metal sculptures.
