Local Cancer Treatment Center Encourages Awareness of Men's Health
Online, June 26, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Highlands Oncology Group (HOG), northwest Arkansas' leading cancer treatment and research facility, encourages residents to be aware of cancers pervasive among men.
June is national Men's Health/Cancer Awareness Month, and HOG strongly supports the awareness of cancer and overall health in men.
This month gives healthcare providers, public policy makers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury, according to the Men's Health Month website.
The most common cancers among men in the U.S. are prostate, lung and colorectal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The most prevalent is prostate cancer, with about 137 men of every 100,000 in the U.S. developing the disease every year, according to the CDC.
However, lung cancer is the most deadly, according to the CDC.
It is important to understand the early symptoms for these cancers in order to increase the likelihood of early detection and treatment.
Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Advanced prostate cancers can cause some symptoms such as problems urinating, blood in the urine, trouble getting an erection, pain in the hips, back, chest or other areas, weakness or numbness in the legs or feet and loss of bladder or bowel control, according to the ACS.
The early symptoms of lung cancer include; a new cough that doesn't go away, changes in a chronic cough or "smoker's cough," coughing up blood, shortness of breath, chest pain, wheezing, hoarseness, bone ache, headache and losing weight without trying, according to the Mayo Clinic.
HOG also encourages all men to be aware of health issues, in particular ones that they are especially susceptible to, and to take the appropriate precautions in order to protect themselves against developing disease. Residents should make an appointment with their doctor if they have any worrying signs or symptoms.
