Local Author Celebrates Sea Otter Awareness Week
Online, October 5, 2010 (Newswire.com) - September 26th through October 2nd is National Sea Otter Awareness Week. This annual designation by Defenders of Wildlife is given to promote awareness of the sea otter and to raise funds and resources for this endangered species and maintain and protect the sea otter and its natural habitats.
Sacramento author Joan (Nora) Dohlke has written a delightful children's book: The Wonderful Adventures of Ozzie the Sea Otter. She based Ozzie's adventures on her own childhood visits to beach and Monterey Bay Aquarium and tales of scuba diving adventures from her grandson. The book has been well received among parents, children and educators and sales proceeds go to benefit various sea otter preservation organizations. Joan (Nora) Dohlke kicked off Sea Otter Awareness Week with a featured reading at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco on September 26th and introduced Ozzie and his sea otter adventures to an eager audience of young Ozzie Otter fans.
"Ozzie Otter" is fast becoming a hit on Facebook and Twitter with his updates and postings about sea otters at Monterey Bay Aquarium, otter preservation, life lessons and values and connections to river otters in the bay area, Eel River and even Scottland. Nora has already written a sequel where Ozzie has more adventures and delves into environmental issues like the recent Gulf Oil Spill which she plans to release in the coming months. The sequel continues to educate the young readers and listeners about life lessons and values as well, such as obeying your parents and the consequences of lying.
Nora hopes to start a new sea otter phenomenon and maybe even an "Ozziefest" in the coming years to celebrate this important event. She is currently raising funds for sea otter preservation and awareness and continues to educate and delight the young "Ozzie" fans of all ages everywhere.
