In his career, Langston Bates has never had a problem making a difference in his professional or personal areas of life. Working for some of the more well-known companies in the concrete industry, Bates is turning heads.

To start his career, Bates became an Associate Representative of the National Precast Concrete Association's (NPCA) Precast Concrete Paving Slabs Committee in 2016. Bates held that same spot on the same committee for the last two terms, including the most recent this year.

"I've been able to have connected and established many relationships in the concrete industry,"

Since 1965, NPCA has represented various manufacturers of plant-produced precast concrete products and has also served suppliers of services and products for the industry. They are also dedicated to bolstering the use of quality precast concrete and providing members with excellent programs and information required for the high performance of a successful prefabricated plant.

"I've been able to have connected and established many relationships in the concrete industry," Bates says. "Being in a leadership role with the committee has helped that immensely."

These NPCA committees have been a steady and vital foundation for the association's growth for many years. And while Langston Bates serves on the Precast Concrete Paving Slabs Committee, there are others that other important. But with the NPCA, the mission statement is still the same.

These NPCA committees were created by the Board to address and resolve significant industry issues. They also discuss and respond to threats and talk about potential opportunities that impact specific product lines within the manufactured concrete products industry. All of NPCA's committees consist of volunteers who are either producer or associate members of academia or specifiers in the concrete industry.

"It's been delightful to contribute to the enhancement of the precast concrete industry," adds Langston Bates. "Dealing with different companies and members has opened up many doors for me professionally."

Langston Bates also adds that precast concrete products are everywhere and more common than people realize. They make up the foundation of NPCA's support above and below ground. They also play a critical role in maintaining a clean, productive, and healthy environment in the workplace. These structures that people see every day include precast concrete products. They include foundations, bridges, manholes, piping, sound walls, retaining walls, and wall panels.

Becoming involved with NPCA's committee is not the only activity Langston Bates has been busy doing. He is also Bekaert's corporate contact for Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI). PTI is a nonprofit organization for the advancement of post-tensioned, prestressed concrete design and construction. PTI also represents a community of professionals and businesses dedicated to advancing quality post-tensioning applications throughout the industry.

"While at Bekaert, I've had the opportunity to become a key networker with various companies, but they are one I enjoy working with the most," Bates states about PTI. PTI is focused on five principal goals and objectives. Those are Educate, Communicate Effectively, Market Certification, Market Post-Tensioning, and Organize for Growth.

Just like NPCA, PTI also offers committees dedicated to the industry and professionals within. These boards consist of members that volunteer their time and effort to PTI and various committees. When it comes to voting, members are selected because of their experience and personal knowledge related to the committee's goal.

"One aspect of PTI that intrigued when I became a contact with is their PTI Convention," says Langston Bates. The annual PTI Convention is an opportunity for professionals in the industry to expand their knowledge of post-tensioning and to network with fellow practitioners. The event also highlights multiple days of technical panels with presentations on a wide selection of post-tensioning design and construction topics. "The Bekaert and PTI Board of Directors have built a long-lasting professional relationship," Langston Bates concludes. "It's an extremely beneficial relationship.”
