KeyCDN Shifts From SPDY to HTTP/2 as One of the First in the CDN Industry

KeyCDN, the European leader in content delivery network (CDN) services is proud to announce that it has launched HTTP/2. Committed to making the web faster and more reliable, KeyCDN will fully support HTTP/2 across their infrastructure consisting of 22 POPs running around the world.

KeyCDN, a Swiss CDN provider, has already been a pioneer in adopting SPDY, the predecessor of HTTP/2 initiated by Google. The experience from SPDY allowed KeyCDN to successfully launch the new HTTP protocol within a short period of time. After testing HTTP/2 extensively, the cutting-edge protocol is now available to all KeyCDN customers at no extra cost. KeyCDN has worked closely with various industry leaders in order to be among the first CDNs in the industry to have implemented HTTP/2. The long-awaited HTTP protocol doesn’t require any changes on the customer side, all content will be automatically delivered with the new standard and replaces the predecessor SPDY 3.1.

This remarkable achievement from KeyCDN will allow organisations to take advantage of HTTP/2 right away without engineering and maintaining their own infrastructure, keeping them ahead of the competition. As content delivery gets faster and smarter, the new standard will ensure better conversion rates for e-commerce sites and lower operational costs.

Advantages of HTTP/2

HTTP/2 is the first major HTTP protocol update since 1997 when HTTP/1.1 was first published by the IETF. The new HTTP protocol is needed to keep up with the exponential growth of the web. The successor of HTTP/1.1 brings significant improvement in efficiency, speed and security. All major browsers support HTTP/2 already, making it the perfect time to globally launch the new protocol for CDNs. Backwards compatibility to HTTP/1.1 will be ensured at all times. The new ALPN extension will allow faster-encrypted connections since the application protocol is determined during the initial connection. HTTP/2 has been designed for multi-host multiplexing and delivering multiple requests over a single TCP connection in parallel. HTTP/2 also introduces HPACK, a standard for faster and more secure header compression.
