Key-Whitman Eye Center Helps Dry Eye Sufferers with Breakthrough LipiFlow Treatment
Online, May 16, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Key-Whitman Eye Center a full service eye care center, today announced that the LipiFlow® treatment it offers to dry eye sufferers will be featured on the television talk show, The Doctors, on May 6, 2013. The show will air on the local CBS station at 2:00 p.m. as well as on CBS affiliates throughout the U.S. and Canada
More than 23 million Americans suffer from dry eye disease. The majority (86 percent) suffer from evaporative dry eye, which occurs when Meibomian glands in the eyelids become obstructed and do not secrete the oily lipids needed to keep the water portion of tears from evaporating too quickly. Common symptoms of the disease include eye irritation, dryness, redness, tiredness, and visual disturbances.
LipiFlow® is a safe, effective dry eye treatment that uses directed heat and gentle, pulsatile treatment to unblock the Meibomian glands located in the eyelids. The goal is for glands to resume their natural production of oily lipids required for a healthy tear film and ocular surface. LipiFlow® improves dry eye patients' Meibomian gland secretions, with the goal of reducing symptoms and improving patients' quality of life. In a clinical trial, 79 percent of patients who received a single LipiFlow® treatment reported improvements in overall dry eye symptoms.
Key-Whitman Eye Center provides dry eye sufferers with a comprehensive dry eye assessment to determine the type of dry eye a patient has and to recommend the appropriate therapies and treatment. The assessment may include a dry eye symptom survey, a LipiView® test to measures the absolute thickness of the oily lipid layer of a patient's tear film and a Meibomian gland evaluation among other things.
"Having LipiFlow® featured on The Doctors will help dry eye sufferers everywhere know about this new, important treatment," said Jeffrey Whitman, MD at Key-Whitman Eye Center. "We are pleased to offer LipiFlow® to help local dry eye sufferers with this chronic, progressive disease."
