KAZOO Named a 2021 Finalist for the National Magazine Award

The Independently Published Kids' Magazine 'For Girls Who Aren't Afraid to Make Some Noise' Nominated for Highest Honor by Top Media Professionals

Erin Bried, KAZOO magazine Editor-in-Chief

On Thursday, The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) announced finalists for the 2021 Ellies, the most prestigious awards in magazine publishing. ASME recognized KAZOO as a finalist for General Excellence — Special Interest.

Two hundred and thirty-one national and regional publications submitted entries this year, including 440 print, 595 digital and 127 multiplatform entries. KAZOO is one of 20 publications nominated for the highest honor, General Excellence, and the only kids' magazine to earn that distinction. This is the third nomination in its five years for the young, independently published magazine, which launched in 2016.

KAZOO is recognized alongside Audubon, The Harvard Business Review, Scientific American and Texas Monthly.

"For a start-up, indie magazine to be recognized with such storied publications is a great honor. And that we do it all with no advertising, a tiny budget, and a full-time staff of one makes me especially proud," says KAZOO Editor-in-Chief and founder Erin Bried, who launched the magazine after browsing the newsstand with her then 5-year-old daughter and coming away empty-handed. "This nomination is a credit to all of our contributors, who put their hearts on every page, and to our young readers, who deserve a magazine as smart, bold, and creative as they are."

ABOUT KAZOO

KAZOO celebrates girls, ages 5 to 12, for being strong, smart, fierce, and true to themselves. Launched in 2016, after running what was the highest-funded journalism campaign in Kickstarter's history, KAZOO has won three consecutive Parents' Choice Gold Awards and the 2019 National Magazine Award for General Excellence. Because representation matters, KAZOO develops all features with legendary women role models, including scientists, artists, athletes, writers, chefs, leaders, and more. In every issue, KAZOO also features original fiction, written by a major author and featuring a fierce girl protagonist, because girls deserve to be the heroes of their own bedtime stories. KAZOO packs every 64-page, ad-free issue with science, art, comics, games, crafts, recipes — and inspiration. For more information, visit www.kazoomagazine.com.
