An online photographic travel journey through 19th century Palestine and Syria, presented by New Boston Fine and Rare Books, is now on display. Visitors can view a full-screen slideshow exhibit of 40 images of original silver print photographs. Also included in the exhibit is the complete 41 page text from this rarity: A Month in Palestine, April 1891.

The travel story begins: "After five weeks among the sights and scenes of the Orient, in Egypt, it was determined we should make the pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We were loath to leave the land of the Pharaohs, where everything had been so novel and full of interest... Returning to Cairo...we found a week all too short in which to enjoy its ever-varying scenes of oriental life."

This real-life travel journey to the Holy Land during the late 1800s takes readers through Bethlehem, Egypt, Jericho, Jerusalem, Jordan, and Nazareth, to name a few. It includes photographic images of landmarks, such as the Temple of Venus and the Jews' Wailing Place; candid photos of the people of this region such a group of lamp servants relaxing under a tree, or native women and girls at the Fountain of the Virgin, or Mary's Well, Nazareth, carrying pottery water jars; and travelers clad in Victorian attire, or departing a boat on the Sea of Galilee.

Because of the imagery contained in this very rare book, both visual and through the written experience of the unknown 19th century tourist, Kimberly Blaker, owner of New Boston Fine and Rare Books, felt the book's contents deserving of display in her web store's Spotlight. The exhibit will become a permanent fixture of the website, joined by previous and future exhibits of historically important works.
