Joe Szlamnik graduated from San Francisco State University in 1984, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He completed his Masters in Organizational Management from the Graduate School of Business, University of Phoenix in 2002. Joe has been actively supporting public service since the mid-1990s. He is presently the Vocational Specialist for Hyde Street Community Services in San Francisco, CA and has also worked as an Insurance Associate at the Chris Di Giacomo Insurance Agency in San Francisco. At present, he is pursuing a Masters in Counseling Psychology, with an emphasis on Marriage and Family therapy at the University of San Francisco. In 2010, Joe was conferred the Drug and Alcohol Studies Certificate by City College of San Francisco.

Joe Szlamnik is a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor through the California Certification Board of Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Counselors. Joe is also a Registered Addiction Specialist with The Breining Institute. He believes that harm reduction treatment is an excellent method to treat substance abuse consumers given that it involves a set of practical strategies that help reduce the negative consequences of drug use, incorporating a spectrum of strategies from safer use, to managed use, and to abstinence. Joe is also actively involved in social welfare activities. He strongly believes in working for the welfare of the needy and regularly contributes to several charitable causes such as "Just Cause," "The American Heart Association," "The Salvation Army", "Hyde Street Community Services," "American Leukemia Society," "The Mended Hearts," and "AIDS Walk, San Francisco." Joe also secures donated goods from Noah's Bagels located at the West Portal location for the consumers at Hyde Street Community Services.
