Jerrold D. Bass Educates Clients About Healthy Hair

When clients discuss the concept of "healthy" hair with veteran hair stylist Jerrold D. Bass, he is both entertained and puzzled.

Ft. Lauderdale, FL (December 25, 2009) - "I've always found product ads that promote 'healthy hair' to be a bit funny," says Jerrold D. Bass. Technically, there's no such thing as healthy hair. That is because hair is basically protein and keratin with no blood supply or nervous system and therefore it has no reparative qualities. Hair is not alive, so it cannot be healthy. Jerrold D. Bass prefers to use the term "well maintained" hair. He explains that once damage has occurred, the only way to repair the hair is to cut off the damage. Of course, a healthy looking head of hair starts with a great looking cut, but that's just the beginning. Like a car, hair needs maintenance in order to preserve strength, elasticity, and shine. As 2010 begins, Jerrold D. Bass shares some hair care tips for men.

Most men don't realize it, but towel drying is one of the biggest causes of damage to men's hair. When hair is wet, it is highly susceptible to damage. When hair is rubbed with a towel, some of the hair can become tangled in the threads of the towel and stretched to the breaking point, causing damage and split ends. Jerrold D. Bass says that to properly towel dry, shake out the excess water and stroke the hair in the direction it grows, rather than rubbing the hair with the towel.

Drying will take a bit longer this way, but after a few haircuts you'll notice the difference in the way your hair looks. For men who choose to wear their hair long, blow-drying is also a common cause of damage. Excessive blow-drying will dry out the hair and scalp. Jerrold D. Bass says that if you use a blow dryer, apply a thermal styling spray to coat the hair and protect it from damage. Additionally, very hot water will strip essential oils from the hair and scalp and lead to dryness.

Another major cause of damage is repeatedly coloring hair. Jerrold D. Bass recommends avoiding at-home chemical products and always seeking a good stylist for such services. His salon knows how to properly prepare your hair and select the best products for your hair type. Jerrold D. Bass believes that the results from a trained professional will almost always look more natural than those produced at home.

Finally, Jerrold D. Bass encourages his clients to use a good shampoo and conditioner to cleanse the hair, add moisture and elasticity, and smooth the cuticle to add shine. Mr. Bass promotes Paul Mitchell professional hair care products.

"The condition of your hair is often a reflection of the overall health of your body," says Jerrold D. Bass. Eat well, exercise, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, and reduce stress in your life. Doing so will result in a healthier scalp. Living well and staying healthy will also increase the rate of hair growth.

Jerrold D. Bass says that at the end of the day, the only real way to remove damaged hair is to cut off the damaged section. Keeping the hair trimmed regularly will help eliminate split ends. Even if you're growing your hair out, make sure to get it trimmed about every three to four weeks, with a focus on removing the damaged hair. The one sure way to get rid of damaged hair is to keep it short. Jerrold D. Bass specializes in short scissor and clipper cuts.
