JEMS / PennWell Corporation Announce Recipients of EMS10: Innovators in EMS 2015 Awards

The Journal of Emergency Medical Services, in partnership with Physio-Control, Inc., a leading provider of emergency medical response technologies worldwide, announces today the winners of the EMS10: Innovators in EMS awards. THE EMS10 winners were recognized on February 24, 2016 during the EMS Today Conference & Exposition in Baltimore, MD.

​The Journal of Emergency Medical Services, in partnership with Physio-Control, Inc., a leading provider of emergency medical response technologies worldwide, announces today the winners of the EMS10: Innovators in EMS awards. THE EMS10 winners were recognized on February 24, 2016 during the EMS Today Conference & Exposition in Baltimore, MD. The ten recipients of the award demonstrated innovation in moving the level of EMS care forward for 2015 and were judged on the following criteria:

  • Introduced or published a new clinical or operational program or concept that constitutes an extraordinary contribution to pre-hospital emergency medicine;
  • Revised a local protocol or standard operating procedure (SOP) that significantly enhanced the efficiency, safety or quality of EMS care or the work environment for EMS personnel;
  • Implemented a unique educational model or recruitment and retention program that drastically increased or improved the local workforce;
  • Spearheaded the development of a new state or regional group or agreement in an effort to improve preparedness for major incidents.

The 2015 EMS10: Innovators in EMS awards and their innovations are:

·        Christoph Redelsteiner, PhD, MSW, MS, EMT-P, Recognized for leading educational reforms in Austria to broaden the role of EMTs throughout the country.

·        Joshua Bobko, MD, FACEP, Recognized for developing a First Care Provider program that trains civilians to provide emergency medical treatment during natural disasters and active shooter situations.

·        Ginny Renkiewicz, MHS, NREMT-P and Sara Houston, BS, NREMT-P, Recognized for fostering EMS research among North Carolina undergraduate students through their Foundation for Prehospital Medicine Research and annual research summit.

·        Bryan Burry, EMT-P, Recognized for bringing cutting-edge medical sanitation technology to Canada through his company, Nano Defense Systems Inc.

·        Nnamdi Nwauwa, EMT, CCEMTP, MBBS, MPH, MMSCEM, Recognized for leading advocacy efforts and developing educational systems to establish a stable and functioning EMS system in Nigeria.

·        Robert Luckritz, JD, NREMT-P, Recognized for his leadership in implementing a volunteer-based First Responder program in Jersey City, N.J., enabling rapid emergency response throughout the city.

·        Dan Fellows, Recognized for incorporating solar panels into his Richmond Ambulance Authority fleet to power their internal systems, increase fleet efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

·        David Persse, MD, Recognized for developing ETHAN, a mobile, pre-hospital resource connecting EMS patients to off-site doctors via video call for responsive non-emergency treatment.

·        Shaughn Maxwell, EMT-P and Richard Campbell, MD, Recognized for revising Washington state law to allow community paramedicine programs in their Snohomish County and throughout the state.

·        Doug Hooten, MBA, Recognized for leading development of mobile-integrated healthcare, a pre-hospital response system designed to treat non-emergency patients by connecting them to community resources.

“EMS has changed drastically over the years, with those changes being driven by innovations from individuals looking to improve clinical or operational practice,” said A.J.
