About 51,540 people will be diagnosed with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer in 2018, according to statistics released by the American Cancer Society (ACS). An estimated 10,030 people will die of these cancers.
Symptoms of mouth cancer may include a sore that doesn’t heal, a sore that bleeds, a growth or thickening of the skin or lining of your mouth, loose teeth, poorly fitting dentures, tongue pain, jaw pain or stiffness, difficult or painful chewing, difficult or painful swallowing and a sore throat, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Some prevention methods that may be used to reduce the risk of oral cancer are: abstaining from tobacco use, limiting alcohol use, staying out of direct sunlight, always using SPF 30 (or higher) lip balm and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, according to the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
For early detection, it is recommended to undergo an oral cancer screening at regular dental check-ups and to examine one’s mouth for irregularities, monthly, according to the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
