Online, February 10, 2011 (Newswire.com) - During the December 2010 school holidays the Western Cape Education Department reported no thefts of computer equipment in schools registered with the ITCrimes initiative. The initiative has been in operation in Western Cape schools since 2007 and to date about 34 000 computers have been registered in about 900 schools across the province. Operations Director for ITCrimes, Andre Pietersen said in a recent interview on SABC3's Expresso Show that ITCrimes have developed and patented a methodology that harvests and stores all electronically imprinted serial numbers on all the major and most of the minor components in a computer.
The ITCrimes initiative has had major successes in assisting law enforcement agencies across the country in identifying stolen computer equipment in order to successfully investigate and prosecute suspected criminals. The initiative aims to have as many organizations and private individuals as possible register their computers on the system so that the tide of IT theft in the country can be stemmed. Computer registrations provide organizations with a very comprehensive asset register, a useful management tool, as a byproduct of their commitment to fighting computer crime.
