1. Getting ahead for businesses...
The author believes that implementing the core ideas of Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 in the 21st century is the single most important step a business can take to get ahead. He has come across various reports which indicate that this is an important development in businesses worldwide. There are other pressing concerns internationally for sure, but this is one of those long term, persistent challenges that need to be tackled.
2. Getting ahead for Indian small and medium businesses...
The author believes at a personal level the world is immeasurably better with Indian people and India in it. He supposes, at least this is how many reasonable and educated people around the world see his country today. Sure, there are people out there who want to harm and trouble Indians. In addition to being a great civilization, the country is governed by the rule of law and the people there are a compassionate lot by-and-large. So, by reforming the laws governing business and providing greater welfare facilities for workers and the poor, the country can progress even further. He feels that small and medium businesses should strive to comply with national standards whenever possible.
3. 'Getting ahead' for the economy...
Srikanth concedes that economic growth alone may very well be the key as is often argued in this part of the world. In a free and democratic country, economists and other thinkers are certainly entitled to that view. However, citizen rights, welfare, liberties and freedoms also come up from time to time. These are emphasized as and when necessary by various institutions and the press.
4. 'Getting ahead' for women...
Srikanth recognizes that this is a difficult topic. Incorrect and erroneous views may have developed in different regions on what women are capable of and how they can contribute to the world of work. Recent advances in medical science and genetics in the 20th and 21st centuries compel one and all to rethink about these issues.
5. Moving toward Equal Pay and non-discrimination of women at work...
Discrimination is a bigger subject which has already been studied by scholars and scientists. So, Srikanth doesn't want to venture into that subject. He feels that the existing set of laws and commercial practices are based on a less accurate view of men and women. These systems are creating distorted incentives for managerial decision making. So, things may progress gradually in certain societies or tribes. By promoting education based on science and creating suitable cultural programs, he feels we can bring the settled understanding about this subject to bear on decisions.
6. On the importance of welfare for India...
Growth is important but welfare can't be ignored as well. The author recollects that lack of toilets and urinals was pointed out as a hurdle for India and the world was forced to doubt India’s achievements in space and high technology in the recent past.
7. On changes taking place in the country...
With an increasing number of women entering the workforce, the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 has become more prominent. Wage ceilings have been revised over the years. Simpler procedures for start-ups have been implemented. Compliance procedures are being computerized. The country is changing.
