HubStor Takes Cloud Storage Security to the Next Level, Supports Multiple Ways to Encrypt Data at Rest
KANATA, ON, September 29, 2016 (Newswire.com) - HubStor Inc., the developer of data-aware searchable cloud storage for business, today announced the general availability of new data encryption features for organizations concerned with advanced cloud storage security.
Adding to a list of enterprise security protections available in the service, HubStor now provides two approaches for encrypting data-at-rest.
"Offering multiple approaches to encrypting data-at-rest made sense for us because we have clients asking for each method. The best method comes down to what you see as risk to be mitigated."
Greg Campbell, CTO, HubStor
1. The first method leverages the built-in encryption of Microsoft Azure in the cloud known as Azure Storage Service Encryption (SSE) for Data at Rest. HubStor now displays a setting to enable Azure’s encryption on a HubStor archive storage container within the HubStor Admin Portal.
2. The second method now available offers the option to encrypt data before sending it to the cloud. In HubStor’s virtual cloud gateway, clients can now apply their key and HubStor will protect data using the 256-bit AES encryption cipher before synchronizing or moving it to HubStor’s cloud storage. This method offers the ability to encrypt a subset of the data that a company preserves in HubStor.
When encrypting data before the cloud, HubStor uniquely leverages its data-aware storage concept to make it easy to use searches and policies in its cloud storage to identify and manage encrypted data.
HubStor encourages companies that need to search their data in the cloud to use the built-in Microsoft Azure encryption because decryption happens transparently when HubStor’s indexing engine needs to perform rendering of the content. Data encrypted with HubStor’s pre-cloud method limits indexing and search to the metadata and access rights on such protected items.
Cloud storage security is superior in HubStor because it meshes activity intelligence, private/sensitive data identification, tagging, Data Leak Prevention (DLP) policies, auditing, role-based access control, and directory synchronization in the cloud, and it synchronizes access rights from on-premises storage arrays to the cloud. HubStor also leverages Azure Active Directory as its trusted identity provider for authentication with options for Single Sign-On (SSO) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
“Companies come to HubStor because we make it easy to consume public cloud storage with the best enterprise-grade security,” said Greg Campbell, CTO, HubStor. “Offering multiple approaches to encrypting data-at-rest made sense for us because we have clients asking for each method. The best method comes down to what you see as risk to be mitigated.”
The new security features are available today for production use in all customer tenants. Organizations that wish to try HubStor are encouraged to start by copying several terabytes of data into the service to trial its capabilities in the first month.
