How Will The General Public React To Contactless Cards?

The payment processing industry has seen many developments over the last 20 years and some have been met with enthusiasm while others have been skeptical about security. Technology has evolved greatly since magnetic strip's and has become contactless

Most UK residents should now own the new 'contactless' credit or debit card which was issued by major high street banks to its customers early in 2012.

Some people might have received the new card in the post and not really read why they were receiving a new card, however, you can see that the new cards are different because they usually include a 'contactless' symbol in the top right hand corner.

The contactless symbol resembles that of radio waves because that is exactly how the new technology works. Inside your card is a small radio chip which transmits frequencies when it comes within a couple of inches of a contactless card terminal, now all customers need to do is wave their card in front of the card machine to pay.

Some people might react to this new method of payment with concerns of accidental or fraudulent transactions but security measures have been put in place which state only transactions worth £20 or less can be paid for in this way. Card issuers have also stated that they will refund any transaction believe to be unauthorized and you will be able to distinguish which is a contactless transaction by the symbol appearing on your statement.

The general consensus at present among the general public seems to be that 'Contactless' is yet another way in which their lives have become that much more comfortable. Many people are already enjoying the use of their cards at the fast food chain 'McDonalds' and other stores are displaying the vinyl floor stickers and coffee cup designs promoting this new trend in retail.
