How to Turn Your Luck on This Lucky Penny Day

Find a penny, pick it up… all day long, you'll have good luck!

Unfortunately, a penny isn't worth much these days (it actually costs more than they're worth to make them). However, Lucky Penny Day is about celebrating the superstition of finding pennies and having luck, and doing what we can to make sure something good comes from pennies and that luck may come our way.

When you're out and about today, see how many pennies you can find on the ground. It might be your lucky day. And, here are a few tips for making your pennies go farther.

Tips for making every penny count

While some people believe finding a penny means more money is coming your way, you don't have to go penny hunting to increase your chances to earn.

  • Consolidate debt. The sooner you can pay off your debt, the better—because the less interest you'll have to pay in the long run. This helps keep dollars in your pocket while also increasing your credit score. A debt consolidation loan is a good idea if you want to consolidate credit card debt, auto loans, student loans, medical bills, and more.
  • Open a savings account. If you don't already have a savings account with your bank, now's the time to open one. You'll have the opportunity to earn interest on your savings, which can help your investment grow faster.
  • Invest. Stocks, bonds, investment funds, mutual funds, annuities, retirement accounts… Investing is a great way to grow your money quicker, and there are opportunities regardless of your experience with and knowledge of investing options.
  • Review your budget. Take a look at everything you spent money on in the last few months and determine where you could possibly cut back. Do you go out to eat regularly? Subscribe to multiple streaming services? Still pay for a gym membership when you haven't gone in months? Figure out what your actual needs are, and cancel or cut back on everything else
  • Sell your stuff. Electronics, unused gift cards, clothes, shoes, accessories—you can sell all of these for fast cash.
  • Cut your insurance premiums. Shop around for better auto, home, or renter's insurance rates. You might be able to find rates lower than what you currently pay.

Ways to celebrate Lucky Penny Day

The concept of lucky pennies stems from ancient civilizations, who believed copper and other metals were gifts from the gods and could provide protection from evil. This superstition was fueled by the fact that throughout history, some people believed two sides of a coin represent good and evil. So, if you find a penny when it's heads up, it's lucky, but tails-side up is not.

Years ago, you could actually buy things for a penny, so finding one was considered lucky since you could actually make a purchase with it. Though that's not the case today, there are a few fun things you can do to celebrate Lucky Penny Day.

  • Search for pennies wherever you go today.
  • Hide pennies (heads-side up for luck) for others to find.
  • Collect all of the pennies and spare change in your home and take it to the bank, or donate it to charity.
  • Create a work of art out of pennies.
  • Make penny-sized treats to share with friends.
