The Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco was first organized by Chinese immigrants in the 1860’s. They wanted to share their culture and traditions. Since then, the parade and festival has grown into the largest celebration of Chinese culture in the entire country. The illuminated parade is one of the highlights of the festival, and about a million people line the streets to watch the beautiful procession.
More than 100 entries will take part in the 2017 parade, which celebrates the Year of the Rooster. One of the most impressive entries each year is the Golden Dragon. This dragon measures nearly 270 feet in length and takes 100 people to handle. Floats, drum teams, and flag corps are among the other entries along with an appearance by Miss Chinatown U.S.A.
The parade starts at 5:15 p.m. The parade route begins at 2nd and Market Street. It continues through Chinatown and wraps up at Kearny and Jackson. Crowds start to gather several hours in advance of the parade’s start time. Those who want to get a spot in the front of the crowd should plan to arrive early.
