Hotel Capistrano Grand Opening Set for Summer 2018

Hotel Capistrano

New Luxury Boutique Hotel by Kimpton with Signature Restaurant and Bar, Spacious Sparkling Blue Pool Retreat, and Luxury Amenities marks the Historic Return of a Downtown Hotel in San Juan Capistrano.

In a long-earned process of passion meets creative, luxury design, San Juan Capistrano will once again return to its historic roots of having a hotel in its Downtown.  The Hotel Capistrano will stand as the first hotel to be built in Downtown San Juan Capistrano in over 50 years.

We are so proud to be announcing the upcoming opening of the first hotel in San Juan Capistrano's Historic Downtown in over half a century. The Hotel Capistrano will be our greatest and most meaningful Luxury Boutique Hotel to date. We're honored to be a part of this historic event.

David Wood, Stratus Development Partners

Representing a 40-million-dollar investment in the San Juan Capistrano Historic Town Center, the Hotel Capistrano will pay tribute to local area history and culture utilizing a mix of bold, graphic elements with intricacies of old Spanish décor that will create an authentic yet innovatively contemporary hospitality experience for residents and travelers alike.

Owned and developed by Steve Oedekerk, accomplished Hollywood writer/director, together with David Wood and Andrew Wood of Stratus Development Partners, the team has been working closely and diligently with the City of San Juan to bring a truly iconic best in class, 4-star boutique hotel that resonates with the local Historic Downtown.

The Hotel Capistrano will feature a striking Spanish Colonial design by award winning architect Samir Hannouche, 102 luxury suites, a new signature farm-to-table restaurant with outdoor patio dining, rooftop bar, extravagant pool area, the stunning Amor Courtyard, executive fitness room, roof deck yoga, and an eco-garden, along with some still to be announced surprises that will be unique solely to San Juan Capistrano.

Located on a 3.18-acre parcel directly adjacent to the Historic Town Center Park, the Hotel Capistrano sits in the heart of the Downtown, effectively supercharging local businesses while servicing and enhancing City Park and community events.

“The City initially came to me requesting that I redevelop the property to help local business and build vibrancy and pedestrian traffic in the downtown,” said Steve Oedekerk, the property owner.  “We raised our daughters here so have the most personal of attachments to San Juan, and there is no more fitting tribute to a uniquely awesome community so filled with history and character.”

Stratus Development Partners is a full-service residential real estate firm that over the last 20-years have designed, developed, repositioned, financed and actively managed over 50 premier hospitality properties totaling over 8,000 keys throughout the US including Copley Square in Boston and the Southland in Dallas.  Their current entitlement and west coast portfolio includes hospitality developments in Sonoma, Fremont, Monterey, Carlsbad, Covina and Orange County.

“We are so proud to be announcing the upcoming opening of the first hotel in San Juan Capistrano’s Historic Downtown in over half a century,” said David Wood of Stratus Development Partners.  “The Hotel Capistrano will be our greatest and most meaningful Luxury Boutique Hotel to date.  We’re honored to be a part of this historic event.”

The Hotel Capistrano will be run and managed by Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, the premiere boutique hotel brand in the US.  The company is highly-regarded for its innovative employee culture and benefits, and has been named a Fortune magazine “Best Place to Work” seven times since 2009.

“We are delighted and look forward to our continued partnership with the City of San Juan Capistrano and our Hotel Capistrano Grand Opening,” said Mike DeFrino, Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants CEO. “The Hotel Capistrano is a design driven, amenity rich hotel that will embrace the rich cultural history and traditions of San Juan Capistrano.  We look forward to delivering the best loved boutique hotel experience in South Orange County.”

San Juan Capistrano is known for its rich history and significant cultural heritage and assets most significant of which is the Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded in 1776 by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order, and is known as the “Jewel of the Missions.”

“The addition of a hotel of Kimpton’s caliber within walking distance to the Mission San Juan Capistrano is itself historic.  As director and on behalf of our Mission Preservation Foundation, we see this exciting project as having a tangible ability to attract new audiences to discover the Mission and experience the special place that is historic San Juan Capistrano,” said Mechelle Lawrence-Adams, executive director of Mission San Juan Capistrano.  “Like the swallows who introduced a whole new generation to the Mission SJC, the Kimpton’s Hotel Capistrano will generate greater commerce, care, and stewardship for this area. The future of downtown San Juan Capistrano is bright and the next year is truly promising with this hotel’s groundbreaking and construction.  A boutique hotel located in the immediate heart of the historic downtown will enhance the area’s identity as an overnight destination and fill a need that we often hear about from our guests.”

Andrew Wood of Stratus, who also has his degree in Western American History, is finally able to combine his personal passion with his career in financing and development. “You’re looking for what can the hotel bring to the surroundings,” said Wood.  “How can we highlight the historic significance of this amazing town.  The goal is to create the perfect fit.”

The Hotel Capistrano will mean an increase in City revenue of over a million dollars per year, and an over five million per annum increase to local businesses.  With the increase in tourism, neighboring property values will rise, as well as supplying jobs to local residents.

Steve Oedekerk lights up when he speaks about the project, “History will be made in an amazing town rich with History, this is an incredibly exciting time.”
