Below are excerpts from Hope Today Magazine interview with Jessica "JC" Cannon by Andreana Thomas, Music Editor for Hope Today Magazine:

Andreana: What was it like growing up in Tennessee?

Jessica: I had a great childhood. We get to experience all four seasons. Growing up in the Memphis area I listened to the Blues, Gospel, and R & B which are very big In the Memphis area. However, being so close to Nashville, I also had the privilege to encounter country music as well. That's where I got my own kind of country-soul genre from. All my big influences put into one big barrel.

Andreana: What made you want to go into the music business and specifically choose country music?

Jessica: I've been singing since the age of six but didn't really want to pursue it until the age of twelve. I've been writing music and poetry since about the age of twelve. My brother who is a rapper actually introduced me to country music around 1998. He was listening to Garth Brooks and it went from there. I started watching CMT and I noticed that there wasn't a presence of African American women. Since I have been singing since I was a child and already had a country accent, I figured I would go with country music. After I finished undergrad I moved to Nashville and said this is something that I want to do. I made a demo and then hit all the little talent shows. I don't' think I was mature enough so after getting 2 Master's degrees I decided that I was going to do it my way. That is why I did the cd. All of the songs were written and produced by me. This cd is just me; I'm doing it my way.

Andreana: That's wonderful! Are you still in school pursuing your second master's degree?

Jessica: No I just finished in June

Andreana: Do you find it difficult being accepted as an African American female country singer?

Jessica: I did in the beginning of 2004. At that time mainly the only mainstream African American country singer at that time was Charlie Pride probably 30 or 40 years ago. There have been a few that come and go but none have been prominent. We really have to make our own avenues. With Darius Rucker having his success in recent years that has kind of given us a renewed interest. It's still difficult and I'm still making my way but people have been really receptive after they see and hear what I do. I'm making progress.

Andreana: You mentioned Darius Rucker. Do you want to work with him sometime in the future?

Jessica: Absolutely! I have loved his music ever since he was with Hootie and the Blowfish. I think he is an amazing writer. His style is different while he is an African American country singer he still has his own little flow to it. It's not that "twangy" country music he's singing about things that pertain to him. He's still Darius Rucker, he's just now singing with an acoustic guitar opposed to an electric guitar. I've admired how work for a very long time and am actually in the process of reaching out to him. So hopefully sometime this summer I will get the chance to work with him.
