Holistic Physician Urges People To Get More Vitamin A The Safe Way
Online, October 8, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Today, holistic physician, Dr. Michael E Rosenbaum released an article explaining why eating foods with vitamin A are so important for good health. He also revealed how to get more of this nutrient safely since some forms of vitamin A can be toxic in large doses.
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin. It has a long history in sustaining life on this planet.
• It plays a key role in plant-based photosynthesis, expanding plants' light energy absorption capacity.
• And it plays several roles in human health including vision, skin and immune health.
According to Dr. Rosenbaum, "If you don't get enough vitamin A in your diet, you won't be able to make special proteins called 'opsins'. These proteins are essential for vision. In fact, worldwide vitamin A deficiency is one of the leading causes of blindness."
Immune strength is also affected by this vitamin. Dr. Rosenbaum continues, "Even kids who are mildly vitamin A deficient end up with a much higher risk of respiratory diseases and diarrhea. Vitamin A seems to help our white blood cells specialize so we can fight off invaders effectively. Also, your body produces a special molecule with vitamin A that signals these same white blood cells and other immune cells to get active."
Finally, notes Dr. Rosenbaum, vitamin A is essential for healthy skin. "Since vitamin A seems to in the production of collagen and your skin's ability to hold onto water, it helps fight wrinkles. But it goes further. Some nutritionists call vitamin A the 'anti-infective nutrient' because it plays such a key role in keeping your body's first defensive barrier - your skin and mucus membranes - strong and healthy."
However, Vitamin A can also be toxic. Too much vitamin A has been linked to increased risk for lung cancer and birth defects, for example. Yet Dr. Rosenbaum also offers a simple way to safely get enough of this important nutrient:
"See, most whole food sources don't contain vitamin A, but beta-carotene," says Dr. Rosenbaum. "Beta-carotene is also called pre-vitamin A because your body converts it into vitamin A. Beta-carotene from whole food sources are safe. Your body carefully limits the amount of Vitamin A you get by regulating the amount of beta-carotene it converts into vitamin A."
For this reason, Dr. Rosenbaum urges people to bypass vitamin A supplements and instead eat more vitamin A foods like squash, carrots, leafy greens and his favorite, chlorella algae. "Ounce per ounce, chlorella is one of the best sources of this nutrient, giving you six times the vitamin A as spinach. Furthermore, chlorella's vitamin A is all in the beta-carotene form. And it's easy to take if you just chew a few Sun Chlorella tablets in the morning."
