Ground-Breaking Non-Profit 'One Can Help' to Celebrate 10 Years at Fundraiser on Thursday, May 5

“One Can Help,” a ground-breaking social justice organization, invites the community to join in celebrating 10 years of helping 1,000 at-risk children and families. The celebration fundraiser will be held at the Windsor Club in Newton, Mass., at 6:30PM on Thursday, May 5, 2016. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at onecanhelp.org.

One Can Help helps court-involved children and their families by providing immediate financial and material assistance when no other funds are available. One Can Help was founded in 2006 by juvenile-law attorney Anne Bader-Martin to help bridge gaps in services that left Middlesex County families without essential items such as school supplies, supervised activities, baby needs, emergency utilities and transportation assistance.

“If people really understood the desperate need out there, they would want to help,” says Newton resident Bader-Martin. “We provide a way of identifying genuine needs in this community and then matching them with resources- quickly.”

In the course of its 10 years, One Can Help has funded everything from summer camps for homeless children to security deposits so families can get out of shelters and into apartments of their own quickly. Every dollar donated to One Can Help goes to provide immediate assistance to families. Each request is vetted by juvenile-justice professionals, ensuring the money goes to its intended purpose.

According to the many letters and e-mails One Can Help has received, these grants have made all the difference in the lives of the people they have helped. “One Can Help saved me from drowning,” reads one such letter from a young single mother. “By paying for one month of rent, I didn’t lose the apartment I finally found. This let me get my foot in the door and set me up for success.”

Bader-Martin says One Can Help could not exist without the outpouring of support it has received from the community at large and from the many dedicated volunteers who help run every aspect of the organization.
