Green Initiative promotes this year’s Earth Hour on 19 March through a unique activation, supported by internal and external communication messages actively pushed through Green Initiative’s social media channels.

During Earth Hour the company will go dark, with lights switched off in its office in iRise Tower. All employees are encouraged to do the same at their home. This year, the Emirates Wildlife Society-World Wildlife Fund in the UAE is partnering with local organisers from Abu Dhabi and Dubai to Sharjah and Fujairah where special public events are planned to observe the hour.

Earth Hour called on all UAE residents to ‘Shine a Light on Climate Action’ to energy efficient light bulbs for the benefit of the planet. Celebrations will begin at 4pm to 10pm, Bay Avenue Park. Everyone is encouraged to Switch off on 19 March, 8:30P.M. local time, and switch on your social power by using hashtags #EarthHourUAE and #ChangeClimateChange.

“The event is in line with the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy 2021 to reduce carbon emissions by 16 per cent by 2021 ... the strategy aims to provide seven per cent of Dubai’s energy from clean energy sources by 2020. This target will increase to 25 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent by 2050”, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, vice-chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Managing director and CEO of Dewa, told Gulf News.

The event is part of a series of initiatives to transform Dubai into an international hub for clean energy and green economy with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050.

Ashiq Ariejeel, Green Initiative Head of Environmental Services, said “The consolidated endeavors of public and private organizations to accomplish the Dubai Plan 2021 aim to turn Dubai into a smart and sustainable city for future generations.”

WWF’s Earth Hour is the world’s largest grass-roots environmental movement towards action on climate change involving 7000 cities. Earth Hour is an opportunity for people around the world to unite in taking a symbolic stand against climate change and act for a sustainable future.
