Governair® Installs Air Handlers in Remote Alaskan Location
Online, August 9, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Oklahoma City, OK - Governair Corporation recently installed two four-section air handling units in a power station in the remote city of Unalaska, Alaska, popularized by the hit show, "The Deadliest Catch®." The city's turbulent climate required special engineering solutions: the outdoor air handlers needed to be capable of withstanding 175 mph winds; and were required to achieve the highest seismic rating available (Zone 4). According to Application Engineer David Lunow from Governair, "Our ability to tailor a custom design suited to these extreme conditions made Governair an easy match."
To meet an increased electrical demand, the City of Unalaska had made plans to purchase two 5.2 megawatt diesel units and to begin expansion of its power house, a $48 million project. The project engineer, Electric Power Systems of Anchorage, specified air handlers to supply the power house with combustion air, cooling, ventilation, and comfort conditioning.
Because there was not adequate indoor space, Bob Heym of Alaska Winter Inc., a CES Group representative in Anchorage, recommended a modular outdoor system with openings in the building wall for the required supply and exhaust ducts.
All internal equipment and power systems for the 20' wide x 12' deep x 40' tall air handlers were factory-installed, and then barged to the site, assembled, and erected. Says Nancy Peterson, Director of Public Works for the City of Unalaska, "The City of Unalaska is pleased that Governair was able to meet the specifications required for this important project."
