GOOD MORNING AMERICA ADVICE GURU FINALIST, FRAN HARRIS,
SAYS NO MORE RESOLUTIONS

At the beginning of each New Year, countless Americans make resolutions that aim to better their lives - losing weight, exercising, eating better, spending more time with their families or kicking a bad habit. Fran Harris, wellness expert, life coach and Good Morning America Advice Guru finalist, says that the most effective approach to sustainable changes is to choose success over your excuses.

"Change is hard for most of us," said Harris. "Rather than setting lofty goals that'll ultimately overwhelm you, set mini goals so you can experience success early and often." A "mini goal" according to Harris is something you can do in the next 24-72 hours and get tangible results. Taking a 20-minute walk or getting 15 minutes of daily "stillness" will likely help calm a busy mind, for instance.

Most annual attempts to adopt healthy lifestyles eventually fail because change requires more than repeating affirmations. According to proactivechange.com, only 46% of Americans maintain their resolutions after six months and an astounding 90% have given up by the end of the year. Harris says one of the reasons resolutions leave people feeling defeated is because they have unrealistic expectations.

"Any change for the better is worth celebrating," she said. "When it comes to weight, the key is to stop focusing on the outside and start measuring success by your internal numbers -- how you feel or healthy cholesterol figures rather than the number on the scale."
