Good Communication Is Good Business

Mayo-based SME consultancy asks SMEs whether they are sending the right message

Communication is at the core of every business's success, according to Olwen Dawe, owner of Irish Business Intelligence. Ms. Dawe, who has recently launched the SME-targeted development, marketing and communications business, claims that many Irish SMEs are having great difficulty reaching their audience, pitching themselves correctly or packaging their business and services due to increased competition and difficult trading conditions.

'Over the past five years or so, I found myself unofficially offering this kind of service to friends and colleagues, whose businesses had lost direction. They'd ended up weary and uninspired, resulting in loss of customers and ultimately, a negative impact on the balance sheet' says Olwen. The recession has expedited this process for many businesses, due to cautious consumer spending and increasing customer attention to brand, reputation and customer service. In addition, businesses undoubtedly have to limber up in a bid to survive today's economic turbulence.

So what does Dawe's business aim to do to help these ailing companies? 'I endeavour to change a business's profile through basic, and straight-forward development and communications improvements - usually around brand, marketing, customer service - and reviewing opportunities for growth. My ultimate goal is to increase awareness of the business and its services, and grow sales. The key is ensuring that the business is communicating effectively, as this is often the area which is damaged during times of change.'

A recessionary-entrepreneur, Dawe has found her new environment a welcoming one, 'I can say whole-heartedly that I have received great support and encouragement from fellow businesspeople. My first month in business has been busy, thankfully, which is a bonus - long may it last!'
