The humanitarian medical organisation has moved away from the Boeing 747 Training Hospital paradigm, to high-tech, 21st Century mobile hospitals, transported inside Hercules C130 and L100 type cargo aircraft.
Operational and Cost Limitations
The GFH Board has examined all the options, in order to develop a 'Best Practice' and lessen the toll on donors, sponsors and supporters funds. Wide-body jets have become restrictive in their escalating costs, which are compounded by their operational limitations and effectiveness for humanitarian work.
Such heavy jets can only reach a handful of major city airports in developing countries, whereas the Hercules type aircraft can reach villages, towns and airstrips in a myriad of situations. eg, in the Asia region, only 35 or so airports can accommodate the large jets (and especially in relation to crowd control for patients etc). Hercules can reach some 2,000 small landing strips, airports and unprepared landing zones in the same region.
