Language Challenge

How has 2021 has flown by so fast? With only a few months left in 2021, it's a good moment to take stock of this year's achievements — and if learning a new language isn't on the list of accomplishments, don't despair. There's still time to master a foreign language, thanks to italki, the leading online language platform, which uses technology and human connection to help people become fluent. And with italki's next Language Challenge — starting on Oct. 1 — a foreign language learning journey will be fun and easy.

Every year, italki holds several Language Challenges to motivate users by boosting their language learning in a short period of time. During this friendly competition, students can work with a teacher to learn Spanish, French, Italian — or any of the 150 languages italki offers. Users track their lessons on a dashboard and measure their progress on a Global Leaderboard, competing against other people who have signed up for the Language Challenge.

"The Language Challenge was created to help people push their limits," says italki COO Alex Tai. "Just like running a marathon, the Challenge can help build someone's confidence and realize that it's possible to learn anything."

Here's something else to consider: It doesn't take much time to master a foreign language. According to Dr. Roumen Vesselinov, Ph.D., at City University of New York, 19 hours of language study on italki is equivalent to a semester in a college or university.

With italki, there are no barriers: Students can sign up for one-on-one lessons anywhere, anytime. It's also affordable, since teachers are selected through an open marketplace. Plus, italki gives users access to a vast community and free tools to enrich their learning process.

Americans are clearly very competitive: 23% of participants this year have been from the United States. In fact, the all-time champ was a U.S. resident, who logged a staggering 746 hours in 50 days (which works out to about 15 hours a day). This year has also been wildly popular: In 2021 alone, participants have logged nearly 30 years' worth of hours.

Through the Language Challenge, users can earn rewards once they hit certain levels, but the biggest reward of all is the self-fulfillment of achieving a foreign language goal and becoming fluent. There's nothing better than that.

The next italki Language Challenge kicks off on Oct. 1, 2021 and runs through Nov. 19, 2021: Learn more here.
