Fresno Superintendent Gives Away Salary, Donates to School
Online, August 30, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Novachi, an education technology company dedicated to providing 21st century tools to educators for free, would like to applaud Superintendent Larry Powell of Fresno County Schools for his passion and contribution to California education. Last week, Superintendent Powell asked his school board to allow him to return what totals approximately $800k in pay.
The move, which stands in stark contrast to the recent corruption scandal in Bell, CA, where the city's lead officials secretly paid themselves hundreds of thousands of dollars in bonus salaries, is a shining example of moral integrity at a time when California needs it the most. Because of his self-imposed salary cut, Powell will now collect only $31,000 a year until 2015-- $288,241 less a year than he would have made had he not sacrificed his income for the sake of his school district.
In a time when budgets are shrinking across the board, and with increasing concern about how our schools will keep up with both national and foreign competition, heroic acts like Powell's are needed more than ever. California was recently ranked 50th in the nation (Last), with regards to the number of students to teachers, which is a key indicator of California's education budget crises. With more superintendent's and other patriotic American citizens doing their part like Mr. Powell, education in California could take a turn for the better.
Novachi is a provider of education technology tools called Student Information and Learning Management Systems. Like Superintendent Powell, Novachi is committed to giving back to the education community. Since its release earlier this year, Novachi education system has been offered for free to all schools in the United States. Novachi would like to encourage others in education, like Superintendent Powell and those businesses who serve the education community, to start thinking about how they can give back to the community.
