The county of Jokkmokk in Northern Sweden has announced that it will offer its full support to people wishing to emigrate to the area. Jokkmokk has long seen a decline in its population and needs to redress the issue of how it will survive the next 1

With a steadily declining population, primarily due to aging and universities situated further south in Sweden, Jokkmokk has reached a point and action has to be taken over the next decade. Both the council leader and Chief Executive of the local Council confirm that if the current annual population trends continue, the region will be an uninhabited county by the year 2050. This is a long way away of course, but if the trend is not changed, it's difficult to see how the region can survive.
Education standards are high in Sweden and most children wish to move on to university when they leave school. The universities are generally located further south in Sweden with a higher concentration in the southern third of the country. Young people generally follow the education facilities and subsequently work. Once they have left for university and qualified for their chosen industry or profession, they generally move to the city or town where they find employment. Many return to the north later in life, but often only a few years before they finish work when they buy a holiday home to retire to.
This fact coupled with the natural death rate leaves Jokkmokk with a loss of 200 to 300 people each year. Immigration to the region is a similar number, but unfortunately a little less. This means that there is a steady decline each year. Germans, Dutch, Norwegians, Italians, British and several other crowded countries account for the bulk of immigrants moving into the region, but people from as far away as Thailand and Iran have made new lives for themselves in the County.

The region is popular with retired people as early retirement is a reality for many due to property prices. Here you can buy a house next to a large lake or river at a fraction of what it would cost in most countries. The cost of living is nowhere near as high in Sweden as it was 20 years ago, and in the north of Sweden the population is very low. This provides immigrants with the opportunity to enjoy a lifestyle that has long been absent in many modern societies for the last few decades.

There are many reports of immigrants who move to Spain, Australia and the USA moving back to their home countries as they find that life is much the same, just with different scenery. In the north of Sweden life is very wild and remote with a true sense of community in most villages. Jokkmokks Chief Executive explains that once people visit the area, many fall in love with it and some return a year to two later to live in the County permanently.
