From Gossip Free to Free Sale
Kevin Hester, Pastor of The Sanctuary Church in Coloma, Michigan was tired of gossip so on
8-8-08 he launched the Gossip Free 8-Day Challenge, that took off and continues to inspire people today. Now he is at it again with something else that is free. This time he is holding a "Free Sale" at his church. It is something he likes to say is a part of God's Economic Stimulus Plan. He believes that God can meet our needs and we shouldn't only look to the government to do it. The "Free Sale" is the same thing as a yard sale with furniture, clothing, sporting goods, electronics, miscellaneous items and even hotdogs and popcorn except that EVERYTHING is free. Kevin got the idea from the Bible. In the Bible, the early churches met each others needs by giving away and sharing their possessions. Kevin says, one of the most familiar Bible passages speaks of "loving your neighbor as yourself" and what a way for churches and people to love their neighbors. He also believes churches have gotten a bad reputation through the years as just being after people's money and this is a simple way for churches to give back and to change that mindset. The Sanctuary's sale is set for mid June, but Kevin hopes the idea of a "Free Sale" will catch on with churches all over and be an example for others to follow. As the commercial says, "there are some things money can't buy", and Kevin believes a churches love and example is one of them.
