Free Musical Learning Activity Templates Available in Noteflight Learning Edition

Noteflight, the Vermont MIDI Project, and Haiku Learning Systems partnered to provide free, standards-based online musical activities for K-12

Now it's easier than ever for primary and secondary music teachers to develop online music classes thanks to ready-made online learning activities.

Noteflight and the Vermont MIDI Project recently collaborated to develop a library of learning activity templates-a catalog of online music learning activities and assessments-for Noteflight Learning Edition (NLE). Designed specifically for K-12 instruction, NLE enables students and teachers to use Noteflight and Haiku LMS to compose music and embed it in online discussions, assessments, and web pages and even turn in lessons in an electronic dropbox. The content and technology enhance both virtual classes and seat classroom experiences.

The new learning activity templates are essentially web pages pre-loaded with musical activities. Templates address specific National Association for Music Education (MENC) standards and include instructions, examples, student exercises, and teacher guides. These learning activities are available on the Noteflight website for anyone to browse. Teachers using NLE are able to copy templates directly to their personal Noteflight account with only a few quick clicks and then adapt them to their own needs.

Joe Berkovitz, CEO and Founder of Noteflight, is pleased to provide teachers with a high-quality, effective resource. "We know that time is a music teacher's most precious commodity, and we wanted Noteflight Learning Edition to provide immediate value to teachers without an expensive learning curve," he said. "That's why we're so pleased to be able to offer these learning activities from the seasoned educators at Vermont MIDI. They know exactly what music teachers need, because that's who they are: music teachers."

Sandi MacLeod is a music expert at the Vermont MIDI Project and says NLE helps bring positive changes and new opportunities to music students. "Students have anywhere, anytime access to complete assignments, participate in class discussions, provide feedback for peers, check for class resources or to simply create compositions whenever they want," she says. "Our teacher group found more and more uses for the tools within NLE to address all national standards for performance ensembles as well as general music courses at all grade levels. The opportunity to invite parents to view classes online has brought new awareness and understanding of the breadth of concepts in music education. NLE puts student work at a teachers' fingertips to demonstrate the incredible learning taking place in their classes."

Bryan Falcón, the CEO of Haiku Learning Systems, says that this kind of collaboration and sharing aligns with the vision for Haiku's learning management system. "We're increasingly seeing Haiku LMS users sharing content via our Share Content tool," he says, "and it's exciting to work with partners like Noteflight who provide a revolutionary product as well as high-quality content and resources. Without the support and feedback of Vermont MIDI and Noteflight, we would not have the amazing content capabilities we have today."
